Title: REGISTERED NURSE (RN)

(Note: All RN positions may be subject to reassignment to various schools or

duties throughout the school year as the need arises. All RN positions may be assigned to a specific school, student or group of students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. (Must pass background screening)
  • Must have the physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity and mobility to perform job
  • Must have the ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships
  • Hold an active license from the State of Alabama to practice as Registered
  • School nursing experience
  • Pediatric and teaching experience
  • Maintain CPR certification
  • Such alternatives to the qualifications listed above or below as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Salary and Terms of Employment

9 month contract – 187 days (Follows teacher schedule)

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Contributes to the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive school health program in local schools.
  • Experience and knowledge in dealing with health issues of children with
  • Demonstrates effective written, verbal, and non-verbal communication
  • Provides direct health intervention as appropriate or as directed by the Lead
  • Utilizes a distinct clinical knowledge base for decision-making in nursing
  • Contributes to the education of the 504 and special education with health needs by assessing the student, planning, and providing appropriate nursing care services, and serving on a multidisciplinary team for 504 and special education eligibility issues.
  • Collaborates with other school professionals, parents, and caregivers to meet the health, developmental, and educational needs of the students, and develops individual health care plans for students with special health care needs.
  • Assists Principals and other health services employees in the maintenance and monitoring of school health records.
  • Communicates and consults with parents of students who (may) have health
  • Communicates and consults with doctors, public health officials and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Maintains inventory of medical supplies and
  • Provides in-service training for staff related to Standard Precautions, Blood borne Pathogens Exposure Plan, and other topics to meet the health needs of employees and students.
  • Plans, implements and supervises health program screenings and activities such as vision, hearing, spinal, height, weight, asthma, medication administration and documentation, immunization assessment and follow- up.
  • Provides home or hospital visits when
  • Assists in the delegation and supervision of LPN’s as directed by the Lead
  • Assumes responsibility of notifying administrator (s) of inappropriate and/or unsafe performance of health services for students by LPN’s or other school
  • Assesses and manages communicable health problems in the school population such as pediculosis, scabies, impetigo, ringworm, etc.
  • Must be able to work flexible hour assignments throughout the school year as needed to meet students’ health needs.
  • Attend meetings, training, and in-service presentations relative to job functions, including presentations regarding behavior management, crisis management strategies, emergency procedures, training modules, and school system and building level professional development.
  • Be regular and punctual in
  • Adhere to all Board policies, school system rules, school system administrative procedures, and federal, state, and local laws.
  • Report work absences and take leave in accordance with Board policies, school system rules, school system administrative procedures, and applicable law.
  • Maintain proper and professional relationships with students, school system employees, and school visitors.
  • Perform assigned job duties in a courteous and professional
  • Properly care for equipment and material resources of the school
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school and/or workplace matters in accordance with federal and state law.
  • Carry out all responsibilities at all assigned
